The devil, cat food and other assorted ramblings

I don’t really enjoy writing this kind of a post, but I just have all sorts of things to share, none of them substantial enough to warrant an exclusive post.  Bear with me.

Last night I did something decidedly uncharacteristic.  I booted Aaron out (that’s not the strange part, I do that all the time) because I needed to get some work done on the computer and he had some recording he needed to do anyway.  What’s strange is that I decided to pick up a movie to watch while I was alone.  Two, in fact.  I never watch movies, but if I do it’s usually because he’s been hounding me to see something.  I only watched one, but I’m so glad I did.  I know, I’m probably the last person in the world to see it, but The Devil Wears Prada was really quite enjoyable.   I have to say that it’s one of very few examples of a film that I found to be better than the book it was based on.  Meryl Streep was fantastic!  At first, I scoffed at her Oscar nomination wondering how such a role could be a contender, but she was delightful!  A few of her scenes left me laughing out loud.  I still have to say, as I did with the book, I was just never sold on her being a really awful boss.  not to say that I’d like to work in a job like that, but I would just never describe her as a devil.  And one more thing… Adrian Grenier?  Wow.  I seriously have to start watching Entourage!

Just as the show was wrapping up, I got an email from my Mom telling me about this: Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Single Product, Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food.  Yep, now I too am caught up in the whole pet food recall scandal.  Of course I’m upset that I may have put the girls at risk by feeding them potentially harmful food, but it’s just a good thing that I have a mother who works in a veterinary clinic and knows exactly what I feed them because this would likely have gone completely under my radar.  I immediately did some research into it (my Mom had only watched it on the news and didn’t have any actual facts) and you know where my thinking went?  "Damn, I’m glad I’m not that guy (president & CEO of Menu Foods)" and "Ho-ly!  That’s a TSX traded company.  Shit!"  I, of course, hate the idea that animals are out there suffering as a result of some bad Chinese wheat gluten.  I just wonder about all of the things we feed our pets, our children, ourselves that contain harmful ingredients without ever knowing a thing about it.  It’s scary!  Throughout this whole huge ordeal, it has really made me wonder about priorities.  The public outrage on the topic (understandable, of course, but I’ve read totally outrageous blog posts detailing all the things wrong with Canada that this could happen) and yet, when I sent out an email link to this video about Iams’ cruel practices, I received but a few responses at all.  I guess it’s another "just not in my backyard" issue, an "I don’t want my dog to die, but I don’t mind if others do" attitude.  Disappointing to say the least.

A big thanks goes out to Erin at Whatever Blows My Skirt for allowing me to take up space over there this week.  If you haven’t checked it out already, you should be reading her blog.  She is one entertaining woman, even if she is a Patriots (yep, I mean New England) fan.   She’s actually cool enough that I can even overlook that.

Feeling the need to gush the day away?  Take a look at Cute Overload, the most appropriately named blog in the universe.  Be warned, you could spend hours there feeling increasingly warm and mushy until you finally hit the breaking point and have to shut ‘er down for fear of melting into your chair.  I’m serious.

And I need a fucking haircut.

That’s all I got.

Glad the pets are okay. Several people at work seemed surprised when I mentioned the tainted pet food. Like no one watches the news anymore.

  2. Courtney Says:

I heard it was dry food, too, and I got scared and checked, but I’m okay. For now, anyway. It does make me curious as to how difficult it would be to start making my own pet food. Wait, who am I kidding? Like that would ever happen. I’m not that ambitious.

I haven’t seen The Devil Wears Prada yet. I haven’t read the book either. Both things I would like to do.

I just got my hair cut. 🙂

not gonna lie, I give a pretty good haircut. Minus the “fucking” you’re not my type.

I also liked the Devil wears Prada as a movie, I ws very disappointed in the book though.

As for pet food, I have no pets. I have a plant. At work. That’s it.

Funny, I was just thinking I gotta start watching Entourage because every time I see a picture of (swoon) Jeremy Piven (swoon) I swoon. A guy that can look that sexy in a bright pink shirt under a brown suit? Yum.

Also, coincidentally, I was asking Adam about putting the cats on a raw food diet just before the tainted pet food scandal started and he was all for it. Now I just need to drive for an hour and a half to pick it up! Guess I’ll be stocking up the freezer…

  5. SherBears Says:

I haven’t seen the movie either.

Not to sound cold, but I don’t have pets, so I just don’t pay attention. If I saw it happening, completely different story.

I’ll have to pop over to those blogs…always looking for new reading material.

i liked that movie too, and i never planned to. i just rented it one weekend along with like 5 others when i planned to hole up in the house. NYE, maybe?

i wasn’t concerned about the pet food thing until the newest recent thing with the science diet prescription food thing – gabi’s on one of those for her allergy issues. her stuff is fine, but it’s a little too close for me.

i need a hair cut too. my girl had an unexpected hospital stay and keeps having to reschedule. because she’s self-employed and has taken a huge cut in her income, i’m waiting as patiently as possible.

Thanks again for “being” on my blog. And as promised last time, I came now to see yours. I have gone through it, I clicked on the pictures and I liked it. Many things made me smile. I have put you on my blog under “These are my favorite blogs”. Which, and I hope not only me, will make me come back frequently

I can’t decide whether I wish you had told us a long time ago about Cute Overload or whether you hadn’t told us at all. I can’t get away from it! I’m mesmerized by all the cuteness! And I love the commentary on it all.

I thought Streep was exellent, but I didn’t really like any of the characters. Still was an OK movie though.

  10. Evey Says:

This whole pet food and treats recall has me worried. New stuff was released yesterday as far as recalls go and some of the treats we buy for Belle were listed. She is obviously fine, but it makes me so nervous to know what to buy her in the future.
