Eat Vancouver!

I once read the New York Times food critic declare that Vancouver is the best place to eat in North America.  For the wide range of ethnic options and the high quality of the food (we did provide the world one Iron Chef, after all) it’s hard to deny we have a lot to offer.

The other day, I was tagged by the marvelous Monkee to write a little more about my culinary preferences.  Courtney was tagged with me and she’s so efficient, she had hers up days ago.

List your top five favourite locations to eat, locally.

  • Honjin Sushi.  I’ve only ever been to the North Shore location, but I’ve heard there is another one downtown.  One of the first posts I ever wrote was about this place.  When people ask if I like sushi, I always say "I like good sushi."  It’s true.  Aaron likes sushi, he’ll eat it anywhere.  Me?  I only take the high end stuff.  None of this "all you can eat" shit.  If I’m paying for sushi, it need to be top of the line.  At Honjin, they make Tuna Tetaki shooters that make my mouth water just thinking of them.  That’s definitely the highlight.
  • The Smoking Dog – Le Chien Qui Fume.  I haven’t been down there in a long, long time, but I used to love getting there just in time to eat before they closed after lunch.  It’s traditional French cuisine, the proprietor direct from Paris.  The food is exquisite, but, of course, my selections are usually limited, given my vegetarian tendencies, but I’ve been thrilled with the omelettes I’ve had and more importantly, the lemon tart.  To. die. for.
  • Anducci’s.  Me and my girls went there for my birthday, remember?  They make the best pasta in these parts, take my word on it.  The Caesar salad is also great, as is the bread they put on the table while you’re waiting.  They make a mean sangria too.
  • Habibi’s.  Traditional Lebanese food.  I’ve never had Lebanese food anywhere else so I can’t compare theirs to anyone else’s, but it’s all delicious.  Every time I’ve been there, I’ve walked away stuffed and happy, basking in the glow of a truly delicious meal and every carnivore I have taken there has never even noticed there was no meat in their food.
  • Milestone’s.  If I had to pick a chain restaurant (which I’d prefer not to), this would be the one.  Their food is good (burgers, pasta, pizza, etc.) and their wine list is pretty expansive.  The vibe they give off in all of their locations that I’ve been to is an easy going one, the kind that makes you want to enjoy a really leisurely meal alternating between eating and enjoying the company you’re with.  That’s probably my favourite part of a trip there.

Until now, I never noticed how beneficial it was to have a chef for a boyfriend for such a long time.  I ate at a lot of great restaurants and tried some really high end places at his insistence.  He really taught me to enjoy good food.  After contemplating this list, I realized that I really miss that.  Not him, that.

So now it’s my turn to tag five others.  If you see your name below, you know the drill.  Make sure you send me an email when you’ve managed to get your post up.  I’ve had a terrible time trying to keep up with all the blogs I like to read lately.

  1. Amy.  This is purely selfish of me.  I’m going to be there tomorrow, I want to know where to eat.  Help a girl out.
  2. Rachael.  Is it sick that I just keep roping her into stuff like this just to make sure she keeps blogging?  Tell us about Austin, girl!
  3. Evey.  She’s always talking about going out for dinner with Chris.  I’d like to know about their favourite haunts over there in Boston.
  4. Grady.  I swear a topic like this came up recently and that he and I were talking about food.  It was something about ethnic foods in bizarre locations.  If this is too close to things you’ve already said Grady, then consider yourself excused.
  5. Vegas Princess.  Here’s a blog I just discovered.  It’s an entertaining read and I’ve been dying to get back to Vegas stat.  I’m hoping this might tide me over a little longer.

Have fun kids!

It took me so long to complete this post that in the meantime this meme truly made the rounds.  Just the other day, I was tagged again, this time by Erin.   Thanks for thinking of me, girl!

Also, if you’re in town next weekend, I strongly recommend you check out EAT! Vancouver at BC Place.  I haven’t been in a couple of years, but it was well worth the ticket the few years I did.
