The idea I fell in love with

The very first time I heard a friend tell me they were going for a cinq à sept, I fell in love with the term.  That day, he was saying it to mean that he was meeting friends for some drinks in the late afternoon before he carried on with his bigger plans for the evening.  I thought it sounded cool.

Over the years, I’ve been exposed to the term again and again, mainly through books, but I’ve also had friends talk about it and even one or two suggest it.  I always resolve to start planning a five to seven every so often, but as usual, I never remember.

Essentially, it’s just like happy hour.  Unless, that is, you look at its origins, which is the part that really intrigues me, a discovery I’ve only made very recently.  Initially, this was the time a man spent having drinks with and romancing his lover before returning home for a 7:30 dinner with his wife.  I love that at some point ages and ages ago it became so commonplace that it was a scheduled part of that day and not only that, it was given a name.

In the same vein and in case you were wondering, I still haven’t read Lust In Translation.  I’ve been pleasure delaying it for weeks, but have committed to starting it when we go away on our holidays this weekend.  I will get back t you on that.

Ooo I love new terms, how much fun! And it is French too, I love it! Funny how thorugh seven years of French I never heard that phrase. But I will have to find some way to use it. And that picture is gorgeous. One of your own or one you found online?
